UFA Year-at-a-Glance
2011-2012 Season

OCTOBER 15, 2011: FLUTE CHOIR EXTRAVAGANZA DAY - 9 am to 3 pm, Gardner Hall, University of Utah School of Music.

DECEMBER 9, 2011: HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION - Day Murray Music, 6 to 8 pm.

JANUARY 20 and 21, 2012: Local Artist Recital and Masterclass.  An evening with Caitlyn Valovick Moore, Utah Symphony Orchestra Flutist and Piccoloist.  Masterclass on Saturday morning. 

MARCH 16 and 17, 2012: FLUTE FESTIVAL with guest artist Marianne Gedigian and Sonata Competition.

APRIL, 2012
: An Evening of Sonatas Recital with the winners of the Sonata Competition.

Admission to Events is $5 for UFA members, $7 for students and senior citizens non UFA members, $12 for non UFA members,
unless marked otherwise.


UFA World Music Competition 2012


The Utah Flute Association is pleased to announce its 2012 Flute Competition which will feature a selection of music from various countries around the world.  Please see required repertoire below.  Competitors may compete in their division or a higher division.  They can select to perform one, two or three pieces of their level, higher division or pieces open to all ages.  Competitors are not allowed to compete in a younger division.  Junior High division is open to all students 9th grade and younger.  High School division is open to all students through 12th grade.  College/Professional division is open to everyone. 

The auditions for the Competition will be held on March 17, 2012 during the annual UFA Flute Festival. 
The application fee is per person, and each flutist may enter in up to three pieces.
  The fee structure is as follows:

Entry Fee Elementary Division Only:         
1 piece=$10.00
2 pieces=$12.50
3 pieces=$15.00

Entry Fee all other Divisions:                      
1 piece=$15
2 pieces=$20
3 pieces=$25

Only UFA Members may audition. 

The winners will perform at the Recital Concert, to be held on April 28, 2012 at Peter Prier Recital Hall in Salt Lake City, after which there will be a reception for the audience and performers.  A mandatory rehearsal for the recital will occur on April 27, 2011.  Accompanists will be provided for the recital but the performers must provide their own for the auditions.  Remember, memorization is not required, but might be nice for the concert! 

Registration deadline is February 15, 2012.  Registrations received after the deadline will only be considered on a space-available basis.

THE ERICH GRAF ENDOWMENT FUND



A generous donation from Erich Graf--principal flutist of the Utah Symphony (1976-2012)--established a fund for the benefit of the Utah Flute Association.  All members and corporate sponsors of our association are encouraged to contribute to this wonderful initiative which helps us fund our organization's costs for activities and events.  To contribute, simply download our membership form and mail in your tax-deductible contribution.  Please note that it is not necessary to join the Utah Flute Association in order to make a donation to the Erich Graf Endowment.
Mr. Graf is a laureate member of the Utah Flute Association.  His generous contributions throughout the years have been invaluable to the UFA and to the flute community in Utah and throughout the USA. The UFA expresses its ongoing appreciation and gratitude to him. 


 

 

OTHER EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

  • July 29 through August 3, 2012: The 33rd Annual Julius Baker Flute Master Class is a 5-night, 6-day intensive workshop for flutists of all ages.  Participants may attend as performers or auditors, and may commute or reside at Western Connecticut State University.  Housing is provided in Fairfield Hall and meals are served in the student cafeteria located in the Student Center.  To register and more information, go to www.wcsu.edu/summermusic.  

 

  • Catherine Winters, student of Elizabeth Weissman, won the MTNA Southwest Division High School Woodwind competition and will represent Utah and the Southwest region at the finals on March 25 in New York City.  Best of luck, Catherine!! 

 

  • Flautissimo will be presenting their Spring Concert on Saturday, April 21, 7:30 PM at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 796 So Mountain Rd, Fruit Heights. They will be performing St Paul Suite by Holst, Scherzo from Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelsohn, Trois Pieces by Bozza and more. Admission is free (donations welcome). Flautissimo is a 18 member community flute ensemble directed by Lorinda Atwater. For more info contact Lorinda at lorinda.atwater@hotmail.com
